All about Harry Potter
Find out more about the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with these fast facts The film makers used a total of 14 cars to replicate the flying Ford Anglia that Harry and Ron use to travel back to Hogwarts. Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick) began his acting career as tiny Ewok, Wicket, in Star Wars Return of the Jedi after his grandmother heard an appeal on the radio for actors under four feet tall. The special effects genius behind the Harry Potter films, John Richardson, was also the man behind Aliens. Aragog, the ancient spider, is a walking, talking 9ft spider, with an 18ft leg span. When Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) found himself facing the giant spider for the first time he was genuinely terrified - he has a big fear of creepy crawlies! As well as being a talented actor, Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) is also a talented singer - he was even offered a place at Guildford Cathedral Choir. According to director Chris Columbus, Kenneth Brannagh was the only man for the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor. 'He's one of the few younger actors who can hold his own against the likes of Richard Harris, Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman,' said Columbus.
The creation of the Chamber of Secrets itself was a tough challenge. In the book, J.K.Rowling clearly states that the Chamber is an enormous and very cavernous place. However, with filming taking place at Leavesden Film Studios, the tallest soundstage was only 28ft high. The solution was to build downwards to create an illusion of depth. The Chamber appears to be hundreds of feet tall and flooded. In reality, the water was only a foot deep and dyed black to give it a sense of depth. The film needed more than 300 construction workers, 25 art directors and draftsmen, four set dressers, four sculptors, two scenic artists, five portrait artists, 20 propmasters and numerous specialists to create environments like the Weasleys' home, the Burrow, the greenhouse, the hospital wing, numerous corridors, Knockturn Alley and others.
