Bridget Jones's Diary: 10 classic moments

continued from page 1
6. R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Just when it all seemed to be going so well Bridget's life falls spectacularly to pieces and both her relationship and her job are over. But the work of the Spice Girls and Maggie Thatcher have not been in vain.
Bridget to Daniel: If staying here means working within ten yards of you, frankly, I'd rather have a job wiping Saddam Hussein's arse.

7. Honesty is the best policy
After spectacularly ending her affair with her boss, Bridget carefully considers a new career in broadcast journalism.
Richard Finch: Why do you want to work on television?
Bridget: I've got to leave my job because I shagged my boss.
Richard Finch: Fair enough. Start on Monday.

8. A new man?
Bridget glimpses Mark Darcy for the first time at a family party.
Bridget: Perhaps this is the mysterious Mr Right I have been waiting my whole life to meet.
Mark then turns around, sporting a reindeer sweater.
Bridget: Maybe not.

9. Public school boy punch-up
Mark Darcy: Daniel, outside.
Daniel Cleaver: What do you mean, outside? Should I bring my duelling pistols or my sword?
Cue one of the greatest celluloid fight scenes ever with Darcy and Cleaver battling for Bridget's affections in true schoolboy style. Forget about De Niro in Raging Bull!

10. The morning after
Bridget is incredulous to find a man who doesn't want her to lose weight, change personality, dress differently or have surgery.
Mark Darcy: I don't think you're an idiot at all. I mean there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother's pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let whatever's in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences. But the thing is, um, what I'm trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much.

Happily ever after? Not likely. Expect more love-life woes, career crises and shambolic showdowns in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason released in cinemas nationwide on 12 November.
