Movies by mood: Five chick flicks
1. Flashdance
Starring: Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri
The 'I want my bra-strap showing' movie
In this movie that spawned a generation of women who defiantly mutilated their T-shirts and flaunted their bra straps, Jennifer plays a steel worker by day and a dirty dancer by night. She hopes to get into a real dance company, but doesn't want any help from her wealthy, influential boyfriend. With a shake-your-booty '80s old-school soundtrack and Jennifer's 'I don't take sh*t from no man, no matter how good-looking and rich he is' attitude, this movie is a winner!
2. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Starring: Angelina Jolie and Jon Voight
The 'So what if I kissed my brother on live TV' movie
What's more invigorating than watching a femme Indiana Jones leave behind all facets of male help so she can go kick butt worldwide? Most likely you'll experience a small amount of jealousy for Ms Jolie's ability to pull off second-skin clothing, but that's immaterial when compared to the knowledge that you, too, have the potential to be as hardcore as Angelina, blood drinking and all! OK, maybe skip the blood drinking. How about a glass of red wine?
3. Thelma & Louise
Starring: Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis
The 'Girlfriends rule!' movie
Feeling underrated, under-appreciated and undersexed? Watching two pseudo-feminists - a waitress and housewife - leave behind a life of abuse, neglect and unhappiness and take on the hustlers, losers and bullies they encounter en route to freedom is just what the doctor ordered. It's male role reversal at its best.
4. Brokedown Palace
Starring: Kate Beckinsale and Claire Danes
The 'My bitches be my best (and only) friends' movie
After watching the story unfold about two American girls who fall for an Aussie hustler, placing them both in a Thai prison for upwards of 15 years, and watching one pick cockroaches from her ear while the other works on self-inflicted cancer, you may want to spend the night being single.
5. What Women Want
Starring: Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt
The 'Still hopeful but won't admit it' movie
Yes, Mel is a dreamy guy, and, yes, he has the hot Aussie accent. But, more importantly, he's featured in a movie that shows a man breaking the women's code. Is it possible? Bear in mind that this movie is not representative of the male psyche. Indeed, many men embody an archaic and draconian perspective. Just pray their first comment after the movie isn't, 'Why did they make Mel wear tights?'
