Film review: Ocean's 13
You can't really fault a film that puts George Clooney and Brad Pitt on the same screen at the same time
Steven Soderbergh's third film in the Ocean's series (please say there will be more!) is once again a fun-filled romp where the baddies are recognisable only for smoking big cigars and wearing gold rings, and the goodies swagger about in smooth suits, spewing slick one-liners.
This time Danny Ocean (Clooney) and his crew are in Vegas on a crusade to avenge their friend Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), who suffers a heart attack after losing everything to the untrustworthy casino owner Willy Bank (Al Pacino).
Is it any good?
Following the negative reviews of Ocean's 12, Soderbergh has revisited what made the first film a hit, sticking to the glitzy 'casino glam' setting and camped-up pace.
The heist itself may not be quite as smooth as that of Ocean's 11, but comedy appearances from the likes of Oprah Winfrey, the impeccable timing of Clooney and Pitt, whose on-screen sparring is great fun to watch, and the sharp, pithy dialogue means that you get the sense everyone enjoyed making the film as much as you are enjoying watching it.
Julia Roberts has been replaced with relative newcomer Ellen Barkin, who plays Pacino's sexy sidekick, Abigail Sponder. And it's great to see a 53-year-old being cast in such a sexy, zesty role for a change.
It's fast-paced, it's visually bright and colourful, it's action-packed, and a little camp. In essence, it's harmless old-school fun.
Who should see it?
All Ocean's 11 fans, especially those who love a bit of eye candy and are looking for some light-hearted comedy relief.
