Like many Australian stars, Ledger graduated from soap acting, playing the role of surfer Scott Irwin in Home and Away in 1997, before making his film debut in Blackrock later that year.

In 1999, he landed his first Hollywood role, starring in the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.
