LONG HAIR CARE ADVICE

Long hair help

A shimmering head of healthy, swingy hair is desired by men and women alike. Not only that, it never really goes out of fashion and is endlessly versatile. If you want further proof at just how legendary long hair is, look at the countless A-listers and models sporting the style

The good

Just like great skin and a healthy body, long, lustrous hair is a definite beauty plus - so if you can grow it past your shoulders, lucky you! It's also versatile and eternally fashionable, and whether you prefer to wear it straight or wavy, really can be your crowning glory. What's not to like?

The bad

Long hair needs to be nurtured and cared for to maintain its strength and keep it looking good - there's nothing worse than when it has been over-processed, fried in the sun, shapeless or frizzy. You'll need to have regular trims and indulge in weekly nourishing hair treatments to maintain tip-top condition and shine.

Styling and haircare tips

The sun can wage war on your hair as well as your skin, especially when it's long. Choose good quality protective products such as Frederic Fekkai Summer Hair Sunshine Shield Spray (£18) and keep slathering your hair, especially when it's exposed to sun, seawater and chlorine.

The first step towards hair that is glamorous and full-bodied is a good shampoo and conditioner. Improve volume with Pantene Pro-V Volume Shampoo & Conditioner (£1.89).

Split ends are a definite no-no when it comes to long hair that rocks, so ensure you get them lopped off every 6-to-8 weeks.

Treat your hair to a deep-conditioning hair treatment such as Philip B's Deep-Conditioning Creme Rinse with Shea Butter (£18.80) once a week, to put the moisture back into lengths that have been exposed to styling, blow-drying and the elements.

When blow-drying long hair, protect it first by spritzing on a heat protective spray like Aveda's Styling Curessence (£11) or Aussie Dual Heat Protection Spray (£4.99) to form a barrier between your locks and the heat of the dryer.

This season it's all about a lightly tousled look - achieve the style with large curling tongs or try plaiting hair when it's damp, for effortless, undulating waves.

Always use a wide-toothed comb when detangling long hair.

Make the most of longer hair by trying out new products and styling techniques to avoid getting stuck in a rut. Our current faves for long hair are Pantene Pro-V's Smooth & Sleek range and Sebastian Professional.
