Four easy Halloween costumes

Mini Frankenstein's monster

You will need

  • A sheet of black cardboard
  • PVA glue
  • White and black face paints, sponge and fine paintbrush
  • A fine paintbrush
  • Black nail varnish
  • A fake neck bolt (available cheaply from party shops and joke shops)
  • Overalls or an old shirt.

For fake blood

  • An old mixing bowl
  • A tablespoon of golden syrup
  • A few drops of red food colouring
  • A few drops of yellow food colouring
  • A few drops of water

What to do

  1. Glue the cardboard into a cylinder to fit around your child's forehead, and trim it until it stands about 20cm high to make a fake Frankenstein crown. Make jagged cuts into the base of the crown to create a monster 'fringe'.
  2. Paint your child's face, neck and hands white, and his nails black. Make dark circles around his eyes and in the hollows of his cheeks. Paint a cross-hatched line for a scar and stiches around his throat.
  3. To make the fake blood, shake all the ingredients together in a screw-topped jar or whizz them together in a liquidiser. You could also add a drop or two of blue dye for a darker result. (Caution: this mixture is very sticky and will permanently stain clothes and temporarily stain skin.) Paint blood along and underneath the throat scar.
  4. Top it off with a fake neck bolt and old overalls or an old torn and tattered shirt.
