Dr Linda Papadopoulos offers tips for busy mums
Multi-tasking is something women do naturally. Why can it be unhealthy?
Dr Linda Papadopoulos: Women do have a natural talent for multi-tasking, more by necessity than choice, I'd say. I wouldn't say it's unhealthy, but, what this survey has identified is that sometimes women feel unable to switch off. This can lead to frustration and guilt, both quite negative emotions that can increase stress.
What symptoms do motor mums suffer?
Dr Linda Papadopoulos: Classic motor mums display similar symptoms to hyperactivity; inability to unwind, short attention span and inability to focus the mind clearly, sleeplessness, restlessness and also sometimes a shorter fuse than usual. None of the symptoms are too serious, but it's important for mums to prioritise themselves so they can unwind and let off some steam.
How can a motor mum unwind at the end of the day?
Dr Linda Papadopoulos: Most mums find a relaxing bath is a great way to unwind but I think it's the simple things that can really help a busy mum to feel that she's indulging herself. Little things like enjoying your favourite dessert uninterrupted, or slipping into a luxurious nightdress, essential oils in a hot bath, or half an hour's reading time once the children are asleep.
It doesn't have to be dramatic gestures like 'getting away from it all'. I think it's more effective to maximise the things you are doing already and create added pleasures within your existing routine.
How can busy women factor in more 'me time' when days are so busy?
Dr Linda Papadopoulos: 'Me time' doesn't have to be a disruptive element to your daily routine. We all know that jobs, no matter how tiresome, have to be done. So really it's about streamlining your routines and adding that little bit of extra planning so that time isn't wasted.
For example, if you plan your weekly mealtimes, it's far more time-effective to make one big trip to the supermarket rather than having to pop to the shops several times a week. The same goes for household chores. Create a routine that streamlines your 'to do' list and you'll be surprised how much time you can save.
Dr Linda Papadopoulos is supporting the Bold 2in1 Crushed Silk and Jasmine campaign that is encouraging mums to indulge in the luxury of 'me time'.
