The terror of travelling with tots

baby being fed on a planeSophie Devonshire reveals the secrets to travelling with kids and keeping your sanity

Have you noticed that all of a sudden your friends have started holidaying in England? They vehemently claim that it's all part of their new green awareness and sense of carbon responsibility.

Look closely however, and it's no small coincidence that the vast majority are parents of small, shouty infants. The real story is that in addition to concern for the environment, they are also petrified about their sanity being squeezed on Squeezy-jet as they try to travel for a 'holiday' with their shouting, wriggling and errant mini-beasts.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that flying with toddlers can be complicated and exhausting and I can certainly testify to the challenges of travelling with mini high-flyers.

My husband's job means that we need to travel frequently with our little ones (one 3 year old 'threenager' toddler with attitude and one crawling, wriggly 10 month old).

I do firmly believe that it can be lovely or at least bearable to get on a plane with your small children. At times it can even be fun. In my experience, this positive outcome is much much more likely if you remember these two essential Ps - Preparation and Presents.
