B and D concentration

When children first learn to read and write, they often confuse the letters 'b' and 'd'. This simple matching exercise will give them a chance to practise.

What this activity will develop:
Reading and language skills

What you'll need:

• Old magazines
• Scissors
• Index cards
• Laminating or contact paper

Setting up:
Using an old workbook or magazine, find and cut out the following pictures: bat, ball, bed, bee, basket, book, barn, bird, door, desk, dog, dress, deer, duck, drum, doll. Mount each picture on an index card and laminate the cards or cover them with clear contact paper.

What to do:
Teach the children to play 'Concentration' alone or with a friend. Have them begin by turning all the picture cards face down in rows. Ask the first child to choose two cards to turn face up. If the objects on the cards start with the same letter sound, the child keeps the match. If the beginning sounds are different, the child turns the cards face down and tries again if playing alone, or passes the turn to the other child. If children play in pairs, the player with the most matches wins.
