What this activity will develop:
Reading, thinking and art skills
What you'll need:
- Large-sized paper
- Markers (multiple colours)
Setting up:
Draw five large boxes on a piece of paper and duplicate the page for your child. Explain to your child that you'll be recording the week's weather by drawing a symbol in each box.
What to do:
Discuss with your child the types of symbols they might draw. For example, the sun, a pair of sunglasses, a flower, a swimsuit or a bottle of sunscreen would all be good symbols to use to represent a sunny day. Encourage each child to use the symbols he or she likes best. Continue to brainstorm possible symbols each day. At the end of the week, have your children dictate a sentence to you about the week's weather and the symbols they used to represent it.
Variation:
Use different symbols to represent other daily situations or activities. For example, have the children brainstorm and record symbols for how they felt each day, what they wore each day or what pets did each day.
