Hot and cold boxes

Glossy magazine photos can keep children mesmerised for hours. This activity gives children a chance to cut out their favourite pictures within a set of guidelines. These guidelines will help improve children's labelling skills. Labelling helps children see organisational patterns.

What this activity will develop:
Reading, thinking and physical skills

What you'll need:

• Two boxes
• Adhesive paper, scotch tape
• Marker
• Old magazines
• Scissors

Setting up:
Cover two boxes with adhesive paper. Draw or cut out a picture of a fire to glue onto one box; label the other box with a drawing or picture of an ice cube. Place the boxes on a table with some magazines, catalogues and scissors.

What to do:
Encourage the children to look through the magazines to find pictures of items that represent hot and cold to them. Have the children cut out the pictures and place them in the appropriate boxes. When they've accumulated several pictures, review the items in each box, asking why the pictures are there.
