Making a birdfeeder

Follow this simple guide to creating birdfeeders that will attract beautiful birds for you and your child to enjoy

Birds can be just like people: foods that are prized by some are shunned by others. To help attract a wider variety of birds to your garden, here are directions for making two different types of birdfeeders.

Pinecone feeder

Materials and tools
• Birdseed
• Large bowl
• Plastic knife
• Paper bags
• Peanut butter
• Large pinecones (buy these at a craft shop if you can't find any in your area)
• Small saucepan
• String

Directions

1. Securely tie string around top of pinecone.
2. Melt contents of peanut butter jar in saucepan.
3. Pour birdseed in bowl.
4. Roll pinecones in peanut butter.
5. Roll pinecones in birdseed.
6. Store in paper bags until ready to hang in tree as a treat for the birds.

Citrus bird feeder
This feeder is versatile and refillable.

Materials and tools
• Birdseed
• Grapefruit or large orange
• Pencil or dowel
• Seeds, berries and tiny pieces of fruit
• String

Directions

1. Cut a grapefruit or large orange in half and remove fruit.
2. Poke three small holes around upper edge of skin, as evenly spaced as possible.
3. Tie string though each hole and join together at the top.
4. Poke a pencil or dowel through any two places in the skin, to provide a perch for feeders.
5. Tie to tree branch.
6. Fill with seeds, berries and tiny pieces of fruit.
7. Refill as needed.
