My three-year-old still wants nappies
Help! My son is two months away from his third birthday. My problem is with potty training. If I leave him without a nappy while we eat breakfast and watch TV, he will go to the potty unassisted, which is great. I did try pants over the weekend and he was excited and proud at first, but within ten minutes he wanted his nappy on. Suggestions? Thanks!
Kim
It sounds as if your son is physically potty trained; he just needs a little help realising it. Sometimes it's difficult for children to give up the safety of their nappies, even when they are no longer comfortable in them (when the nappy is wet or soiled).
Your son needs to be helped into the role of big boy. Now sounds like the time to throw away the nappies together - make a little ceremony and get him to join in. Next, give him the big boy pants. Then you can welcome him into the world of growing up by taking him out for a special treat, such as an outing or a film. This way, he can see that growing up has its advantages.
It's OK if he has accidents in the big boy pants at first. This often happens. He just needs the message that he is in pants now and that going back to nappies is not an option. Naturally, the first few days of success should be met with enthusiasm and encouragement on your part. It won't be long until he has settled into his new accomplishment.
Best of luck,
