'Do a Good Turn' with Ariel
continued from page 1
Around the home
- Change those old energy-eating bulbs for long life, low-energy compact fluorescent bulbs
- Clean your windows regularly to make the most of natural light
- Avoid air conditioning in the summer by using natural cooling - close the curtains in your rooms whilst they're not in use during the day and open the windows when they are to allow the air to ventilate between rooms
- Use an electrisave meter to tell you just how much electricity your home is using. By knowing which appliances are using the most energy you can adopt new energy saving practices. For example, not leaving the iron on by mistake!
- Do a good turn for the planet by turning the temperature dial of your washing machine down to 30 degrees. Not only does this save up to 40% of the energy used per load, but you will also be saving money and helping to reduce your carbon footprint
A greener way of life
- When choosing homewares look for products made from sustainable or re-used materials. Eco-chic is the next big thing!
- Recycle all you can. If you don't have doorstep recycling service check out www.wastepoint.co.uk for your nearest recycling point. Recycling saves valuable resources and energy
- Use a solar powered fountain water feature to keep your home cool. By introducing water into the atmosphere it will keep it a few degrees cooler
- Get on your bike. Buy a bike rack, oil the chain and pump up those tyres so it's ready to use as soon as you need it
