Cube calendar
Older children will enjoy using adult tools to make this unique cube calendar from matching wooden blocks. Kept on a bedroom desk or bookshelf, it can help them keep track of the day's date.
What this activity will develop:
Maths, physical and art skills
What you'll need:
- 2 wooden cubes (2½cm sides)
- Small block of wood cut 7½ x 5 x 2½cm
- Hammer
- Wood chisel
- Permanent marker
- Paint or varnish (optional)
What to do:
- Carve an indentation 5cm long, 1½cm wide, and 1½cm deep in the centre of the small wooden block using a hammer and wood chisel.
- Print numerals on the cubes. First cube: 0, 1, 2, 6, 7, 8. Second cube: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. (The number 6 is used upside down for the number 9).
- Paint or varnish cubes, if desired. Let dry thoroughly.
- Place the cubes in the indentation.
How to use:
Turn the cubes each day to show the date.
