Sorting cutlery

Young children love helping out around the house. Praising them as 'good helpers' will encourage them to be helpful children as they grow up. Sorting and categorising is important for children to learn, as it reinforces observation and classification skills. Children enjoy knowing the differences between different objects and being able to group them accordingly.

What this activity will develop:
Maths and thinking skills

What you'll need:

  • Cutlery

What to do:
Open the cutlery drawer and let the child stand on a stool or sturdy chair (or pull the cutlery tray out of the drawer and place it on the kitchen table). Then give the child the cutlery and have him or her group the spoons, forks and knives (no sharp ones!). Once they've successfully completed this task, have them divide the spoons and forks into the different types (teaspoons, soup spoons, and so forth). Ask the child about the various pieces. Take the opportunity to compare the different sizes and shapes of the cutlery and ask the child to describe the differences to you. With older children, you can begin discussing what the various utensils are for.
