What this activity will develop:
Vocabulary and thinking skills
What you'll need:
- 6 to 10 different everyday objects
- Paper
- Pencils
- Timer (e.g. kitchen timer or egg timer)
Setting up:
Divide the children into groups of three or four. Give each group a different object, such as a ball, a toy car, a pencil, a light bulb, a clock, an eraser or a book. Ask each group to appoint one child to be the recorder for the group.
What to do:
Have group members brainstorm for 10 minutes as many verbs as they can associate with their object. The recorder's job is to list all verbs the group members say. The group with the ball, for example, might generate a list that includes throw, hit, go, fly, swing, crash, kick. At the end of the time, have the groups pass their objects on, change recorders and follow the same procedure as before. Later, groups can share their objects and lists with the entire group. After the activity is completed, objects and lists can be displayed and added to, if desired.
