Money cubes
This easy-to-assemble game teaches children how to add simple sums of money up to a pound. Expand your child's skill by eventually including cubes that represent amounts over a pound as well.
What this activity will develop:
Maths, art and social skills
What you'll need:
- Block of polystyrene
- Craft knife
- Twelve peel-off dots
- Fine-tipped permanent marker
What to do:
- Cut two cubes from the polystyrene.
- Print a money value on each peel-off label (for example, 5p, 10p, 25p, 50p, 75p, £ 1).
- Place a label on each side of the cube.
Rules of play:
- One person can play by rolling the cubes and adding up the values on the two sides that turn up.
- Two or more players can take turns rolling the cubes and adding the sums on paper. A player who rolls a value that equals £ 1 gets an additional turn. Whoever has the highest sum of money after three rounds is the winner.
Other ideas:
Create a money centre. Make a list of various money values. Players roll the cubes, add the values in their heads and circle the sums on the list.
