Architect's delight

Children will have a blast building these towers of marshmallows. Children learn about measurement and must be creative in figuring out how to build higher and higher towers that won't collapse. This is another great rainy-day activity.

What this activity will develop:
Motor, art and thinking skills

What you'll need:

• Miniature marshmallows
• Cocktail sticks
• Paper plates
• Ruler or tape measure
• Graph paper
• Marker

What to do:

1. Each person gets a paper plate, marshmallows and cocktails sticks. Use the plate as a base for building the tallest tower possible. For best results, the bottom of the structure should be wider than the top.

2. After the towers are completed, measure them.

3. Take the towers apart, and count the number of toothpicks and marshmallows used in each one.

4. Make a chart to compare the height of the towers and the number of toothpicks and marshmallows used. Did the tallest tower use the most toothpicks? Which tower used the most marshmallows?
