Plant cuttings

Your children can learn a wonderful lesson about how things grow by watching plant clippings sprout roots. When the roots mature, you can transplant them to flowerpots or soil, and the child will have his very own garden.

What this activity will develop:
Science skills

What you'll need:

• Paper or plastic cups
• Plant clippings

Setting up:
Next time you trim houseplants, save the clippings.

What to do:
After you're finished with your trimming, show your child how you can grow new 'baby' plants from the clipped-off pieces of the grown ones. Place the clippings in cups of water. Have the child check on them every few days to see how they are doing. It won't be long before he sees roots begin to sprout. When the roots mature, help your child transplant them to the soil in the garden or a flowerpot.
