Science categories

This game gives children a chance to use their scientific knowledge while at the same time developing their communication skills. It's a great non-competitive game because children have to work together to give clues and find answers. Be sure to match up children who are the same age or at the same skill level.

What this activity will develop:
Science and language skills

What you'll need:

  • Index cards
  • Marker
  • 3-minute egg timer

Players
Team or teams of two

Setting up:
Print the following categories on cards:

  • Things found in soil
  • Things found in the ocean
  • Things found in ponds
  • Things found in the desert
  • Things found in trees
  • Things found in the mountains
  • Things found in the sky
  • Things found on islands

Place all of the cards facedown in a pile. Set the egg timer where both players can see it.

What to do:
The object of the game is for each player to help the other name the category within the time limit.

  1. The first player draws a card from the deck and reads the category silently.
  2. The first player then turns over the timer and begins giving clues that will help the second player name the category. Clues should not include any words on the card. For example, clues for 'things found in soil' could be earthworms, roots and seeds.
  3. When the time limit is reached, the players switch roles.
  4. Keep track of the number of categories each player guesses within the time limit.
  5. Expand your child's knowledge by encouraging her to add new categories to the game.
