question
I've heard about ParentsOnline, an online government initiative to help "bridge the gap between parents and teachers". What does that mean, exactly?

answer
The UK government is pretty Internet-savvy, and it's helping to change our perceptions of what's available online. Government sites like UK Online are designed to broaden our understanding and use of the Internet, and help us access government information and resources more readily. Parents Online is one such resource.

Run by the Department for Education and Employment, Parents Online is packed with useful advice and links to additional sources of information. It also encourages schools, libraries and academic institutions to register and take part in its activities. Essentially, Parents Online aims to be a central meeting point for parents and teachers.

The articles are solidly researched, and have the sense of authority and reliability you’d expect from a government-backed site. However, it can also be quite dense and unexciting in places.

It looks fine and runs smoothly, but don't expect state of the art design or flashing lights. Mostly, it's short items of text and accompanying links that pop up in new windows. The paired-down design does mean the site is very fast and is easy to navigate.

You'll find details on safe surfing, a schools showcase, several bulletin boards to exchange information and ideas, competitions, and resources to hold Parents Online events. There's also an online Agony Aunt to help with parenting problems.

Regularly updated and easy to approach, this is a site worth adding to your list of bookmarks.
