School league tables: are they online?

by Graham Jones

question
We're quite a mobile family (in the military) and I'd like to send my children to the best schools in the areas we settle in. But it's difficult to measure the schools without some objective guidance to refer to. Can you let me know if the league tables are available online?

answer
There's a full listing of the league tables at UK School Search. You simply enter a postcode (just the first three digits will do) and hit ‘search’. You're then given a listing of schools in the area to click on. This leads to a summary of the report of the school and shows graphs of results.

The site is simple, effective and amazingly fast, so it's a good place to start. In addition, you can search for Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education) reports, which provide much more detail than the league tables.

The league tables, drawn up by the Government, only show how well a school has performed in examinations. In contrast, the Ofsted reports, show how well the school is doing on a range of other issues – for instance, the quality of the lessons or the performance of teachers.

To view the reports you'll need a program called Adobe Acrobat, you can get a free copy from Adobe.

The Ofsted reports are quite long so they take a while to download. However, they give a very clear picture of what each school is like. You can discover more about the organisation at its own website. There's also detailed information about what inspectors look for when they visit a school.
