Teachers resources online

by Graham Jones

question
Can you give me a rough guide to what resources are available for teachers online? I’m at college at the moment and I’m sorry to say that my lecturers aren’t into the Web.

answer

A good place to start is Chalkface. It's a portal for teachers - i.e. it provides news and information about education, as well as a comprehensive directory of other websites dedicated to teaching. You can look up specific academic subjects or general classroom issues like bullying. There's also a 'staffroom' where teachers can chat about relevant topics.

Another great directory is the UK Schools Web Guide. The design of this site may not suit everybody's taste (it's rather garish) and it uses 'frames', which make it incompatible with some web browsers. Even so, the site is packed with hundreds of useful links for teachers.

On the other hand, a huge list of links can be daunting. And some of the pages you're led to may seem useful in class, but just how accurate is the information? That's where the Internet Detective comes in handy. It's a tutorial to help you work out what's good or not so good on the Internet. You'll find a section dedicated to teachers and handouts to help children evaluate what they see on the Web.

As a trainee teacher, you may find the information at the Teacher Training Agency's website valuable. Also try the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers. Both sites are a bit dry but they have considerable amounts of useful information.

You might also want to look at the National Union of Teachers. The NUT has an extensive website and a special section for newly qualified teachers.
