Maths lessons: online help
My two children aged 7 and 9 aren't strong on maths and nor am I. Can you recommend some sites we could use together?
Ordinarily, the distinction may not seem important, but on the Internet, it is. If you search for maths you will miss the sites listed under math, so start with math and youre likely to come up with the best possible search results.
A good site to start with is NRICH. Its run by an interest group, including mathematicians from Cambridge University. The site has a magazine, a club and some online games and puzzles. Youll also find links to other mathematics websites.
Table Trainer is a straightforward site that allows you to download a computer program of the same name. You then use the program to help children learn their times tables. Independent seven year-olds might also enjoy MathCat, a cute animated site that helps children discover all kinds of mathematical facts.
Aunty Math is about problem solving. For parents, there are hints and tips to help get the right answer, so if you need to strengthen your maths alongside your childrens, this site is a great starting point. Funbrain also has a support site for parents.hwforkids.com has maths exercises you can print out and work through together. The exercises are graded according to the U.S. equivalent of the UKs National Curriculum Key Stages.
If you're still stuck for ideas, try topmarks.co.uk, an educational directory with links to an index of other websites. Youll find over one hundred maths sites, all of them graded according to Key Stages.
