Teach your kids to chat safely

by Kirstin Watson
Make sure your child sticks to these basic chat room rules for a safer online experience.

1. Always check with an adult before entering a chatroom.

2. Always use a nickname when chatting, it's more fun to keep people guessing anyway.

3. NEVER give out your real name, age, address, phone number, email address, or home address when chatting.

4. Don't reveal the name of your school, tell people whether you are a boy or a girl, publish or send photos of yourself.

5. Keep all your passwords private.

6. Don't put any personal information in online profiles or leave them blank - this way there is less chance of people contacting you when you don't want them too.

7. Remember that the people you are chatting to might not be who they say they are. It could be an adult or older child winding you up.

8. If someone says something which makes you feel uncomfortable, leave. Let an adult know what has happened and report it to the chat room provider.

9. If someone is bullying or harassing you online save the conversation and report him or her to an adult you trust and the chat room provider.

10. NEVER arrange to meet someone you have been chatting to online, unless your parent/carer agrees to come with you.

11. Stay away from over 18 websites. They may seem exciting, but the warnings are there for a reason and you don't want to be clocking up a huge phone bill, do you?

12. Don't open emails from people who's name you don't recognise, they may contain nasty viruses or unacceptable images.
