Helpinghandz and BT click&buy launch a £10 million mobile content giveaway to promote safer surfing for kids

The promotion is aimed at encouraging children to play it safe on the Internet. For just a £2 flat fee, users who sign up to www.safesurfers.co.uk will receive £10 worth of credits to spend on ringtones, logos and pictures in return for making five promises to act more responsibly online.

The aim of the promotion is to raise awareness for Safe Surfers, a major new campaign developed by Helpinghandz to help educate children on the dangers of the Internet. Before they complete their registration for the giveaway, users will be asked to agree to five promises, including not giving out their own personal information or that of their friends, not to agreeing to meet up with strangers that they meet on the Internet and to report any kind of bullying online.

'The Internet can be a fantastic playground for kids, but unlike at school, there isn't always a grown up on duty to look after them,' said Mike Hames, former head of the paedophile unit at Scotland Yard, who endorses the Safe Surfers project. 'It is important that children learn to take responsibility for their own safety online and the Safe Surfers promotion is an excellent way to encourage them to do so.'

Self-protection for kids
The Safe Surfers campaign is the first to actively promote self-protection and rewards kids who make their own personal online 'Promise' to stay safe when surfing and chatting to their friends online.

'Safe Surfers gives children an incentive to keep reminding themselves of the rules that will help to guard them against exploitation,' concluded Hames.

Once users have registered they need only hit the click&buy button on participating web sites to pay for content and services.

'BT actively supports initiatives that encourage children to stay safe on the Internet,' said Ian Price, CEO, BT click&buy. 'By partnering with BT click&buy, the Safe Surfers campaign is also ensuring that payments for its £10 million ringtone giveaway are taken securely, helping to foster a responsible attitude to all elements of Internet use.'
