Is it okay for me to spy on my children?

by Graham Jones

question
I can’t always monitor my two children. Jack’s nine, Selina’s eleven and they both use the Internet for their homework. I trust them but worry about what they might see when they’re surfing. Is there any way I can find out what they’ve been up to without them knowing?

answer
You certainly can keep an eye on your child’s activities and it's quite easy to do. Firstly, though, don’t worry too much. The vast majority of children don’t find horrible things when surfing – and the research shows that even if they do, they quickly get rid of it.

It is a good idea to let your children know that you have the ability to trace their movements on the Internet. This means they will be less likely to try to explore some of the seedy sites. The easiest way to track down your child’s movements is to use the ‘history’ file. Your web browser keeps a log of every site that is visited.

Check this by pressing the Control key and typing ‘h’ (Ctrl-H). In Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator this brings up the history window and you can then look at all the sites that have been visited.

However, the history file is double edged – it means that all the sites YOU have looked at are easily available to your children. They can keep an eye on you as well.

Therefore, you should clear the history each day – it is best to set the history settings to zero or one day only. This means to keep track of your children you need to check their activity daily, or their history will be wiped.

As an alternative you can get a program called Cyber Surveillance which keeps a complete record of your child’s surfing activities as a ‘slide show’.
