Should I use an Internet filtering programme?

by Mark Ivey and Elizabeth Kemper

question
I'm wondering whether to use an Internet filtering programme for my pre-teenage children’s computer as this is away from where I spend a lot of my time, the kitchen. What features should I be looking for?

The first thing we recommend is that you MOVE the computer to where you spend the most family time and where you can see it. Put the computer where you live, don’t let your pre-teen use the computer upstairs away from supervision.

In addition, look at filtering software, such as Kidproof, Net Nanny or Surf Watch. Ask your local computer store for help.

See whether your Internet service provider has parental controls you can set to manage access to the Internet (AOL has solid controls). Next, see if there's an ISP in your area that specialises in filtered Internet service – that is, you subscribe to an Internet access company that takes care of filtering out the hate, violent and adult websites for you.

When it comes to filtering the software you put on your computer, look for a package such as Net Nanny, that allows you to easily turn off the filters when you want to surf or when you want to do extensive research.

Also, make sure it’s easy for you to go to the software manufacturer’s website and download the updated databases. Remember, just buying the filtering software package is not the end of the process; you also have to update the databases of known adult-content sites frequently.
