City scramble

This game is a great way for children to expand their vocabularies. They learn new words from their teammates and are challenged to recall their own knowledge based on an alphabetised system.

What this activity will develop:
Vocabulary, thinking and language skills

What you'll need:

• Cardboard
• Marker pen
• Two baskets

What to do:

1. Cut the cardboard into 52 small squares. Make two sets of alphabet cards, printing one letter per card.
2. Place a set of alphabet cards in each basket.

Players:
Game leader
2 scorekeepers
6 to 20 players

Rules of play:

1. Divide into two teams and pick a scorekeeper for each team.
2. The teams form two lines. The scorekeepers stand about three feet in front of the teams and hold the baskets.
3. When the game leader says 'Go', the first player on each team draws a letter from the team's basket without looking.
4. The players read their letters to the scorekeepers and each name a city that begins with the letter drawn.
5. The scorekeepers determine if the city is familiar. If it is, the scorekeeper signals the next player to come draw a card.
6. The teams continue drawing cards and naming cities until each team member has had two turns. The first team to finish is the winner.

Variations:
Play the game using countries, foods or famous people instead of cities.
