Bonfire night basics
continued from page 1
Home firework safety
However, if you're determined to have a firework party at home, or to attend one in a friend's back garden, make absolutely sure you follow the Fireworks Code. Your children's lives could depend on it.
- When buying fireworks, make sure they comply with BS 7114.
- Keep all pets and animals indoors.
- Keep the fireworks in a sealed box, and use them one at a time, replacing the lid immediately.
- Read the instructions carefully, using a torch - never a naked flame.
- Light fireworks at arm's length, using a taper or firework lighter, and stand well back.
- Wear gloves when holding sparklers, dispose of them in a bucket of water as soon as they are finished and never give them to children under five.
- Never return to a firework after it has been lit.
- Never throw fireworks or put them in your pocket.
- Above all, ensure that children are well supervised.
Home bonfire safety
- Fire safety experts advise against having a bonfire in your own garden, but if you must, make sure you build it well away from houses, trees, sheds or fences.
- Before lighting a bonfire, check beneath it for animals - and children! - and don't use petrol or paraffin to ignite the flames.
- Never throw fireworks onto the fire.
- Keep party guests well away from the fire.
- Don't drink alcohol if you're in charge of a bonfire.
Whether you throw your own bonfire party or attend a public display, make sure you keep safe, wrap up warm - and have fun!
