School support
You hear a lot about how parents should get involved in their childrens education. A friend of mine is a school governor, but this seems to take up a great deal of her time. Are there other ways to get involved? My child is in year one at the moment.
If your family and working life is already busy, your priority needs to be support for your own child in school. Show a definite interest in what your child has to say about school, and help in a relaxed way with any reading or work that comes home. Be ready to build up a friendly working relationship with your childs teacher. You should be given regular opportunities in the school year to come in and discuss your childs progress and read a written report. Make sure you come along. You should also attend any other open days or evening events.
Its important not to feel restricted to scheduled contact with the school. Try to have informal conversations with the teacher about your child and what is going on in his or her class. Teachers are people, and they would welcome hearing that your son was enthusiastic about frogs he saw, for example, or that your daughter is keen to follow-up an interest in castles by finding a library book on the subject.
If you have the time, most schools appreciate general support from parents in the work of the school. Your childs teacher may welcome regular help in some of the classes, perhaps by hearing children read. You can also be active in the Parent Teacher Association with fund-raising and social events, and all schools have a governing body that includes some elected parent-governors. However, if you are going to offer this kind of support for the school, its wise to get an accurate idea of how much time is involved before you commit yourself.
