pooh sticks

To enjoy Winnie the Pooh's favourite game at home you'll need a fairly large paddling pool, some colour-coded sticks and a dry day!

The object of the game: To race your matchstick or twig to the other side of the pool and win!

Prepare in advance

  • Colour two or three matchsticks with different coloured waterproof markers (don't let the children do this in case they mark their clothes). If you're using small twigs instead, wind a different coloured elastic band round each of two or three.
  • Fill the paddling pool and construct a 'bridge' over it (this could be as simple as a piece of wood placed across it and supported with books or a piece of string suspended above it and fixed to garden canes either side).

How to play

  1. Play in twos or threes so the game doesn't descend into chaos. Give each child a matchstick or twig.
  2. Agitate the water in the direction of the 'winning' side of the bridge, then get the children to drop their sticks in on the count of 'three'.
  3. Let the children continue to swish the water. The winner is the child whose stick touches the other side of the pool first.
