Posh picnics

When the sun comes out, there's nothing we love more than packing up a hamper and heading for the great outdoors. But picnics don't have to mean a scotch egg on a park bench. It's time to splash out on the luxuries for a truly decadent al fresco experience

A Love picnic

An anniversary, a declaration of love, or just because the sunshine's gone to your head, there's nothing more romantic than a twilight picnic in London's Regents Park.

The food: Treat you and your partner to a Fortnum & Mason hamper, ranging from £85-£200. These mouthwatering packages feature a raft of posh tidbits such as quails eggs, foie gras and Pimm's. For true luxury, Caviar House and Prunier offer bespoke hampers of fine caviar and seafood.

The drink: Champagne brand Ruinart, has launched the perfect package for toasting the two of you. Packaged in leather and brass, this sophisticated hamper contains a bottle of bubbly, engraved flutes and a linen tablecloth.

The extras: Don't forget the little luxuries, like sparkling tealights, silk cushions and linen napkins.

A very British picnic

Is there anything more British than a day at the races? Have a flutter by all means but don't forget the food. If you can't escape the capital, the hilarious Hendricks & Chap Olympiad will have you reaching for your bowler.

The food: Harrods is your first stop when it comes to a 'Britnic'. For around £30 their luxury picnic ranges - adorably named after London's best parks - include the pick of the food hall. Or why not enjoy your picnic under the watchful eye of Lord Nelson? The Trafalgar Hotel's roof-top bar holds special picnic events complete with hamper and spectacular views.

The drink: When it comes to summer drinking us Brits do it best. Try an ice cold Hendricks G&T (with compulsory cucumber) or a fruit-packed Pimm's.

The extras: The traditional tartan rug is a must, while a parasol keeps the sun off and feels suitably British too. Small child with fan optional.
