First assessment

by Dr Howard Lee

question
What is likely to happen during the first assessment given by my GP? I understand that this is usually done at 8 weeks of age, what will my GP be checking for?

answer
This is the first major examination to be carried out by your own doctor, normally at around 6 – 8 weeks when your baby is due to start her vaccination programme. This will include a physical examination of her heart, breathing, and general development of her joints, limbs, and muscles. The hip joints particularly are examined for proper development and movement ranges. Observations of eye movements and response to sounds are noted. Her ears will also be examined. She will also be weighed, her length and head circumference measurements taken and all of these noted on her ‘growth chart’.
Your own observations and comments are very valuable in these first few weeks and you will be given the opportunity to discuss any worries that you may have.
