Hearing test

by Dr Howard Lee

question
I understand that at 6 to 7 months of age, my baby will be offered a hearing test, given by the health visitor. What is checked for and what would I expect to experience?

answer
These tests, and the various techniques used, have been developed over the years. They involve making observations of the baby’s response to sounds when any ‘visual’ clues are denied. They do not involve any of the sophisticated apparatus that is used for adult audiometry screening. Your own observations about your baby’s responses to household sounds will be sought. You will also be instructed on how to make continuing observations at home, which will also help to monitor the ongoing developments.
