Feeding, sleeping and mum-in-law tips

by Christine Hill

question

My baby is 10 months old:

  • Why does my baby cry when I give her a bottle of milk?
  • Why does my baby cry when sleeping?
  • Why does she wake up even though I have fed her at night?
  • Why does she prefer my mother-in-law to me?
  • She has a tendency of liking me in the morning - why is that?
  • Why does my baby sweat a lot even though it's cold?

Thank you
Selma

answer

Dear Selma,
You seem to be having a rough time at the moment!
I'll try and take your questions one at a time:

  • Why does she cry when you give her a bottle of milk?
Is it possible that you are giving her more milk than she wants? As long as she is putting on the correct amount of weight, a baby of nearly ten months only needs about 20 ounces (600 mls) of milk in a 24-hour period. This adds up to 2 to 3 bottles a day in total - depending on how much milk you are adding to her solid food, and presuming she is having 3 to 4 solid feeds a day. Some babies are not that keen on milk! At mealtimes, offer her a few ounces of milk, then as much food as she will happily take, and then more milk. If she is having 3 bottles of milk during the day, offer her water or fruit juice instead of milk at the lunchtime feed.

  • Why does she cry when sleeping? (Or do you mean cry herself to sleep?) If she is crying in her sleep, she could be teething (See below). If she cries herself to sleep, how long does she cry for? She may just be missing you, but that is OK, as she needs to learn to fall asleep on her own.

  • Why does she wake at night?
At 10 months, the most obvious reason is teething. When babies are teething, they dribble a lot and want to bite everything. They also tend to wake during the night because their gums are hurting. If this is the case, give her some Calpol when she wakes up in the night. The other cause could be hunger. When she wakes, do you offer her a bottle? If you do, how much does she take? If she takes less than 4 ounces, it is unlikely that she is hungry.

  • Why does she prefer my mother-in-law to me?
Your baby might well love your mother in law, as she is her granny. She probably doesn't prefer her to you, but perhaps your mother-in-law has more time to play with her, and make her smile. Mothers often spend so much time worrying about childcare that they don't have time to simply play and talk to their babies.
