MMR vaccination fears

by Dr Howard Lee

question
My son has had a runny or blocked nose since March last year. He is now 18 months old and breathes only through his mouth. I have asked the GP many times about this problem, but I was told there is nothing to worry about. My son's breathing is noisy, his nose is runny most of the time, and I am afraid to have him immunised with MMR because of possible side effects.

Should I consult a specialist, and which?

answer

If your little boy has had a blocked nose for all of this time, it does sound as if he has some form of nasal irritation.

As far as MMR and any other type of protective vaccination is concerned, there would be no problems. I assume that your GP has looked at your son recently?

It is also very common to find that these little ones develop allergies of various kinds. Have you any animals (cats, dogs, etc) in your home? The other possibility is that he may have pushed something into his nose whilst playing, and this may be causing the problem. Do go and have another word with your doctor, tell him how concerned you are.
