My one-year old son burnt his hand very badly
My one-year-old son burnt his hand by touching a light bulb and not letting go right away. The worst damage, which was deep blistering, occurred at the base of his fingers - on the pads of his palm and the lowest digits. This happened about two months ago and the subsequent scarring is so tight that it has prevented him from opening his hand completely. He is using it again, but not well.
Does infant burn scarring usually go away in time? Or should I be showing his hand to a plastic surgeon or neurologist?
Jennifer
I'm sorry to hear about your son's hand.
The deep blistering you describe is called a second-degree burn. The fact that he has permanent scarring may mean that he has additional third-degree burns in that area as well. Second-degree burns generally heal by themselves, but the scarring you describe most likely will not go away on its own. I encourage you to see a plastic surgeon about this. Your child is in the middle of his fine motor development, most of which involves manipulation with his hands. The restraint of full use of his hands from scarring needs to be evaluated and corrected as soon as possible.
