Honey – safe for babies?

by Dr Howard Lee

question
What effect does feeding honey to a baby have?

answer
The ancient Egyptians were aware of honey’s diverse uses and it’s still well known for it’s culinary, medicinal and healing properties. It’s a food that supplies easy energy, vitamins and trace elements.

However, honey shouldn’t be introduced into a baby’s diet until some time after their first birthday.

It contains a spore that, whilst harmless to adults, can cause a severe form of food poisoning in babies – called Botulism. Check with your own GP
or health visitor to get their recommendations about when it’s safe
to include this food.
