Early teething

by Kim Loos

question

My son is teething. He’s already got two teeth at four months. How soon before the top two teeth come in? He's chewing everything in sight! By the way, I had six teeth when I was four months old.

answer

Your son is definitely teething a bit early, but it sounds as if it runs in the family. On average, the lower four primary anterior (front) teeth and the upper central incisors come through at around six to seven months, with the upper primary lateral incisors following about two or so months later. Given your history and the fact that he already has two teeth, he may have four more soon.

You could help him with a teething ring. Chewing and drooling are definitely normal reactions to teething. A temperature or loose stools are now also thought to be teething symptoms.
