General teething patterns
My nine-month-old daughter cut two bottom teeth in December. Five months have passed with no signs of any more. Should she see a dentist?
Here are guidelines on the general teething pattern for infants, from newborn to three years: At about six months, the lower central incisors (bottom front teeth) generally come through. These are followed by the upper incisors and both maxillary (upper) and mandibular (lower) lateral incisors. By the first year, eight incisors are usually through.
At about 15 months, the first primary molars (back teeth used for grinding food) come through. At about two years old, the canines are present. Shortly thereafter, the second primary molars come through. By the age of three, all of the primary teeth are usually through. Remember, these are average ages. Some children's teeth are cut sooner and some come through later.
