Crawling downstairs
My 12-month-old can crawl upstairs very quickly but getting down is another matter. I want to teach her how to do it safely. Any suggestions?
There is usually a gap between competent climbing up the stairs and finding out how to come down them. How does your daughter manage at the moment? Does she just wait until you carry her down? You need to be careful not to push this development before she is ready. Older babies often have a very good feel about what they want to try and when.
Babies and toddlers usually manage coming downstairs initially by backing round and coming down feet first. They either do it in a reverse of the upstairs method, or by straightening up and sliding down on their stomach a pretty effective method, so long as the stairs are well carpeted. So, you could try positioning your baby in this way, but it would be better to wait until she shows signs of wanting to tackle downstairs motion.
