Underweight baby – should parents be worried?

by Dr Howard Lee

question
Our daughter weighed 8lb 6ozs at birth. Despite eating well, she now weighs only 12lb 15ozs at 24 weeks, which we are told is underweight.

She fills her nappy 4 to 5 times per day, but everything passed seems normal. She is a happy baby and lets us know when she is hungry.

The health visitor keeps weighing her and, although she states she is above the ‘danger’ line, she is not happy with her weight gain.

Could you please give us your thoughts on this.

answer

The birth weight of your daughter was, of course, usually entered onto her ‘weight chart’. This established her particular growth/weight centile (some babies are big, some small, some average – just like adults). What seems to have happened now – as is shown by a 24-week weight – is that she has fallen to another, lower centile. This is why the Health Visitor is ‘not happy’.

It may well be that the frequent bowel actions are a feature of the weight changes; all of the nutrition taken by mouth is not being used, for example. The Health Visitor/Doctor will look into this, I am sure. It is rarely a serious problem – most often, it is caused by something like milk intolerance. I am sure that you have no major cause for concern. I hope everything settles for you soon.
