Pain while breastfeeding

by Dr Howard Lee

question
What are the symptoms of thrush of the nipples? I have been having constant slashing pains, before and during breastfeeding. It is so bad that I have to take paracetamol, but even that doesn't seem to help. Could you please help?

answer
It does sound as though you have/have had some form of mastitis - not always an infection, but sometimes caused just by congestion/blocking of the milk ducts. As with any infection, there will be inflammation in the affected area. Thrush usually gives 'irritation' and soreness rather than pain. If your nipples look normal, you are unlikely to have a 'thrush' infection.
