Switching from bottle to beaker

by Coram Family

question
bottleI am having difficulty in getting my seven-and-a-half-month-old son to use a beaker. He currently drinks juice from a bottle. Is it all right for him to continue using a bottle for a while longer or should he stop using it now?

answer
Some babies and toddlers are keen on their bottle. It’s useful to encourage them to drink from a beaker but there is no need to make a big issue over it. It does not have to be either/or. Encourage your son to try the beaker without making him feel he has to lose his bottle.

The potential concern about juice in bottles is that it’s easier for babies and toddlers to swish drinks around their mouth and use the bottle as a sweet tasting comforter – bad news for teeth. However, it sounds as if you have thought about this issue and have diluted his juice. Does your son get all his milk from breastfeeding? If not, try offering milk in the beaker – for variety.
