Weaning a baby with a sweet tooth

by Coram Family

question
My baby is six months old, but she was born six weeks early. My problem is that most of the time she vomits up the foods that I give her. She just wants sweet things like bananas and will only eat directly from my fingers.
Can you please give me some advice?

answer
Your baby is still very young and as you say, she was born prematurely. However, even full term six month olds can have a robust attitude towards trying out new foods. It depends a lot on what you mean when you say she ‘vomits up food’. If she dribbles or spits them out, then this sounds a normal baby reaction. Rather a lot of babies do this to indicate ‘this tastes or feels odd’ or even ‘it’s fun to spray food’.

On the other hand, if the food is partly digested or there is any sign of projectile vomiting (when it really shoots out!), you definitely need to talk to your health visitor or GP.

At six months, your baby should still be getting most of her nutrition through breast or formula milk. The non-milk foods can be introduced steadily, without any sense of panic. The advice is usually to give babies fairly bland food first, such as baby rice, but cereals like this don’t have much taste and the discerning baby may not be enthusiastic about eating them.
