Wakey wakey

by Alison Sparkes
continued from page 3
This is what you do:
  • Even though it’s really tempting to let your baby go to sleep at the breast try to put him into his cot awake to go to sleep at least three times in every 24 hours, or he’ll never learn to relax himself into sleep.
  • Don’t go in immediately when your baby cries. If you know you’ve done everything he needs – changed him, bathed him, fed him and cuddled him – then just let him go for a while. Gradually lengthen the time that you wait before going to check. (Obviously this doesn’t apply if your baby’s unwell)
  • Keep to a routine so your baby knows when bedtime is coming – bath, breast or bottle, story, cuddle and bed.
  • Try to make your baby’s room less stimulating at night. Put up a good blackout blind to keep the light dim, and perhaps cover up toys with a sheet.
For further advice, or contact with a sleep clinic near you, get in touch with your health visitor at your GP’s surgery.
