Sleep – how much is too much

by Dr Howard Lee

question
My daughter is 16 months and she sleeps 13 hours or more a night. She is also having a few hours during the day. Is it normal for her to sleep this much?
Lisa

answer
Dear Lisa,
Sleep, in one way or another, can be a feature in a child’s development, which gives concern to most parents at some time. (Usually, of course, it is ‘lack of/being unable to’, etc.)

The duration of sleep will depend on a child’s age, personality and intelligence – and on the duration of any ‘afternoon’ napping. The more placid child tends to sleep a great deal more.
It is wrong to lay down rigid times for the amount of sleep required. The best guide to the adequacy of sleep time is the ABSENCE OF FATIGUE in the daytime, coupled with the general level of activity during this daytime period. If there are ‘normal’ milestones within your little one’s development – and you have had no cause for concern about her health in any other way – then you have NO worries. Just regard it as a bonus, at this stage. She has certainly developed a very good ‘habit’ for the future and will come to no harm.
If you do have other concerns about her general health in any way, mention this when you next visit your GP.
All the best
